Captain Justin’s Straight-Talk Guide to Choosing the Right Trip

Hey y’all—Captain Justin here from Paradise Charter Fishing in Pensacola, Florida. If you’re booking a fishing charter in the Florida Panhandle, especially for the first time, you probably have some questions—and honestly, you should…

1. What Kind of Fishing Do You Specialize In?

Not all charters offer the same experience. Ask your captain what types of trips they run:
  • Inshore or offshore?
  • Targeting species like red snapper, redfish, or trout?
  • Geared toward families, beginners, or seasoned anglers?
Captain’s Note: At Paradise Charter Fishing, we tailor trips to experience level and what’s biting that season.

2. What’s Included—and What Do I Need to Bring?

Never assume! Ask about gear, licenses, and what you need to pack:
  • Are rods, bait, and tackle included?
  • Do I need a license?
  • Can I bring snacks and drinks?
Captain’s Note: We provide all the gear and licenses, and send you a simple packing checklist before your trip.

3. What’s Your Weather and Cancellation Policy?

Weather changes fast on the Gulf. Don’t be left guessing:
  • What happens if the weather turns bad?
  • Is rescheduling or a refund an option?
  • What if I need to cancel last minute?

4. Is This Trip a Good Fit for My Group?

Not all trips are one-size-fits-all. Ask if the experience matches your group:
  • Is it family-friendly?
  • Is the pace relaxed or fast action?
  • Will the captain help coach us?
Captain’s Note: We customize the vibe—whether you’re fishing with kids, friends, or first-timers.

5. What Happens After the Trip? Do You Clean the Fish?

This one’s often overlooked. Know what to expect after the dock:
  • Will the crew clean and bag your fish?
  • Where can you have it cooked nearby?
  • Any rules about what you can keep?
Captain’s Note: We clean and bag your fish, and even recommend spots that’ll cook it fresh for you!

Final Thoughts: Book the Charter That Fits You

It’s not about finding the “best” captain—it’s about finding the right fit for your group and fishing goals. Whether you want a serious offshore challenge or a chill family morning on the bay, asking the right questions up front makes all the difference.

Captain Justin’s Advice from Paradise Charter Fishing

Hey y’all—Captain Justin here from Paradise Charter Fishing in Pensacola, Florida. One of the most common questions I get from guests—especially folks visiting the area—is: “What’s the best time to go fishing in Pensacola?” Truth is, there’s no bad time to fish here on the Florida Panhandle, but the species we target definitely shift with the seasons…

Spring Fishing in Pensacola (March – May)

Inshore Fishing

  • Redfish around grass lines and oyster beds
  • Speckled trout active early and late
  • Sheepshead near bridges and structure
  • Flounder near drop-offs and grassy points

Offshore Fishing

  • Cobia migration near the beaches
  • King mackerel nearshore/offshore
  • Triggerfish and snapper action (seasonal)

Why Fish in Spring?

Great weather, manageable crowds, and a wide variety of fish make spring a top choice.

Summer Fishing in Pensacola (June – August)

Inshore Fishing

  • Speckled trout and redfish early mornings
  • Mangrove snapper near docks and jetties
  • Occasional tarpon in deeper passes

Offshore Fishing

  • Red snapper (in season) on reefs and wrecks
  • Amberjack, grouper, vermillion snapper
  • King mackerel and mahi-mahi (when lucky)

Why Fish in Summer?

High-paced action and peak fishing season. Book early—snapper dates go fast!

Inshore Fishing

  • Bull redfish schooling in bays and passes
  • Flounder feeding ahead of spawn

Captain Justin’s Advice for a Great Day on the Gulf

Hey y’all—Captain Justin here from Paradise Charter Fishing in beautiful Pensacola, Florida.

If you’re gearing up for a trip with us, first off—good choice. Whether it’s your first time on the water or your tenth, there’s something special about spending a day out fishing in Pensacola. The views, the salt air, and the chance to experience real Florida Panhandle fishing—that’s what we’re all about.

Now let’s talk about what to bring so you’re ready when you step on board.

This isn’t just a checklist (we’ll give you that too)—this is more about helping you feel prepared so your trip is smooth, fun, and focused on what really matters: making memories out here on the Gulf.

First Things First: The Florida Sun is No Joke

If you’re joining us for a fishing charter in Pensacola, you’ll be out on open water with the sun reflecting off the water. Even on a cloudy day, that sun can sneak up on you.

What to Bring for Sun Protection:

  • Sunscreen (something that won’t sting your eyes)
  • Polarized sunglasses (they help cut the glare and let you see fish in the water)
  • A hat (wide-brimmed if you want max coverage)
  • Long sleeves or a neck gaiter if you’re fair-skinned or burn easy

Dress for the Water, Not the Dock

This isn’t a fashion show—it’s a Pensacola fishing trip, and you’re going to want to stay cool, dry, and comfortable.

Wear something that:

  • Dries fast (quick-dry shirts, fishing shorts, or lightweight pants)
  • Breathes easy for your skin to allow you to enjoy fishing
  • Lets you move freely

Flip-flops are fine for the beach—but not the best choice for a charter fishing boat in Pensacola.

Snacks and Drinks: Simple is Smart

We’ve got a cooler on board, so you don’t need to bring anything big. But if you’re booking a family fishing charter in Pensacola, especially with kids, a few snacks and drinks go a long way.

Suggestions:

  • Bottled water or sports drinks (it gets hot fast)
  • Easy snacks (granola bars, crackers, sandwiches)
  • No glass containers, please

If you’re not sure whether something’s okay to bring, just give us a call before your trip.

Motion Sickness: Better Safe Than Sorry

Some days the Gulf is calm like glass. Other days? Not so much.

If you’re new to deep sea fishing in Pensacola, here’s what I recommend:

  • Take motion sickness medicine before you board
  • Bring ginger chews or acupressure bands
  • Keep your eyes on the horizon if things start feeling off

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about—it happens to the best of us. It’s best to be prepared and not have to worry about it.

What We Provide (So You Don’t Have To)

At Paradise Charter Fishing, we’ve got all the gear ready:

  • Rods, reels, tackle, bait—yep, that’s on us
  • Fishing license? Covered
  • Ice and cooler space? Handled

All you have to do is show up ready to enjoy one of the best fishing charters in Pensacola, Florida.

Bringing the Kids?

We love running family-friendly fishing charters. If you’re bringing little ones, think about:

  • Child-sized hats and sunglasses
  • Snacks and drinks they already like
  • A hoodie if we’re heading out early
  • Something to keep them entertained between the action

Fishing with kids in Pensacola is one of my favorite parts of the job—it’s even better when they’re set up for success.

A Few Things to Leave Behind

To keep everyone safe and comfortable on your Gulf Coast fishing charter, please leave at home:

  • Glass bottles
  • Spray sunscreen (slippery and messy)
  • Extra-large coolers (our boat has what you need)
  • Anything you wouldn’t want to lose to the ocean

Wrapping It Up

Fishing in Pensacola, FL is one of the best things you can do while you’re here—and it doesn’t take much to be ready for a great time on the water.

You can access the real checklist on the website, but this guide should give you a good idea of what to expect. If you’ve got questions, just ask—we’re here to help make your trip fun, safe, and memorable.

See you at the dock.

Hey gang, our clients bring success to Paradise Charter Fishing and inviting them to fish is what I love the most, so whenever I get letters like this, it just makes my day. As you can see, we had a blast hammering red snapper. It was awesome! Thanks for coming out with us, ‘til next time.

Here is the letter from our client:

Justin, Me and the boys had a great time fishing with you –it was the highlight of our vacation! I wanted to give my sons a special trip as a reward for their high school graduation and thanks to you I was able to do that. What can be better than catching your limit? I was also impressed with your boat handling skills. As you recall the water was still a little rough after the tropical storm but you got us there and back in one piece and with plenty of time to fish. Everything, the gear, the boat, the trip, was great. We also felt we could trust you to do everything possible to give us a great fishing experience-no cutting corners just to make money! If I ever go fishing again within 100 miles of your boat, I’m going with you. It’s worth the drive to go with someone we can trust. Please feel free to share this thank you note with anyone you wish. If you need a reference, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Joe St. Romain

Paradise Charter Fishing is your best stop for great charter fishing in the Pensacola area. Please give us a shout to find out more about your next trip.

Tight lines,

Great day on the water with a solid group of folks. They were new to fishing, but the red snapper were chewing hard, and they made short work of them.

It is always a great feeling as a charter captain when I can bring new folks out on the water and put them on quality fish. Of course everyone loves to catch fish, but as an added bonus, red snapper are some of the best tasting fish in the ocean.

These happy folks went home with plenty of snapper for them and all their friends. If you’re looking for a great day on the water, we can make it happen.

Tight lines!
